In our days of providing mobile grooming in San Diego, we see a lot of beautiful long-haired pups, and enjoy making them look spectacular for their families. In addition to looking fabulous, their pet parents are also grateful to have them de-shed so they have less fur to manage for a little while.

Shedding is a real problem in some homes, especially if you have family members sensitive to loose fur, which can cause problems with allergies. Shedding occurs in all breeds (unless they are hairless) to varying degrees, so if you are looking to add a lower shedding fur baby to your family, there are many great options out there. However, while there are long haired dogs that shed less than most, it does not mean they require less attention to their grooming needs. Just like pups that shed more (or shed like crazy in some cases!), long hair and low shedding breeds need regular grooming to prevent painful matting from occurring and prevent dirt, oils and parasites from collecting in the fur and being trapped against the skin.

Here are a few great long hair breeds that tend to shed less:

Shih Tzu

A Shih Tzu puppy nearing its first birthday sheds like crazy. So much so that most people, having been told they shed less than most long haired breeds, wonder if something has gone drastically wrong. Once the puppy sheds this “puppy coat” the time of excessive shedding ends and as an adult the Shih Tzu sheds very little. The breed still needs special attention to its coat with regular washing and brushing to prevent matting.

Maltese

Who can resist the long silky coat of the Maltese? While they do need frequent grooming and daily brushing (and we do mean daily) to keep the fur looking neat, shiny, and free of matting, the good news is that the Maltese sheds very minimally. So their long fur will not be all over your furniture or clogging up the vacuum cleaner.

Lhasa Apso

The Lhasa Apso has thicker, heavier fur and is a bit larger than the closely related Shih Tzu. It is also a great choice if you are looking for a low shedding pup. The Lhasa Apso’s fur does tend to tangle and matt quite easily though, which requires frequent grooming and daily brushing to keep them looking spiffy.

Yorkshire Terriers

Cute and peppy, Yorkshire Terriers never fail to win people over with their wonderful disposition. The fact that they shed very little is also a real plus, especially since maintaining their fur takes a bit of effort. Yorkies benefit from daily brushing with a pin brush and frequent grooming sessions.
